The Christchurch City Council is warning motorists to stick to their lanes otherwise they could be ticketed.

The new west-bound bus lane installed as part of the upgrade of Riccarton Road between Harakeke and Matipo streets is about to become operational.

The new lane means there are now bus priority measures in place from the Hagley Park end of Riccarton Road through to the Westfield Riccarton Shopping Centre.

Christchurch City Council Transport Operations Manager Steffan Thomas says Riccarton Road is one of the busiest bus thoroughfares in Christchurch.

“In the past buses have had to jostle with other traffic, which has resulted in delays and unreliable travel times for public transport users.’’

“With bus priority measures now in place from Deans Avenue through to Matipo Street buses won’t get stuck in traffic, which should mean they run to schedule. That should make using public transport a more attractive and reliable option for people journeying between the city centre and the western suburbs of Christchurch.’’

Mr Thomas says it is important other vehicles keep clear of the bus lanes along Riccarton Road during the hours they are in operation.

The new west-bound bus lane will operate around-the-clock between Picton Avenue and Clarence Street and between Division Street and Matipo Street. Between Mandeville Street and Picton Avenue, it will operate in the morning (7 to 9am) and afternoon (3 to 6pm) peaks only.

Mr Thomas says “motorists who misuse the bus lanes will be sent a warning letter for the first two weeks but after that they will ticketed. If they are caught driving in a bus lane they will be liable for a $150 fine, while those who park in the lanes can receive a $60 fine, along with a bill for towing costs.”
