Three fires across Canterbury are believed to have been caused by fireworks, prompting a warning from Fire and Emergency New Zealand ahead of Guy Fawkes.
A vegetation fire was reported in Fernside on Monday, followed by another in Ferrymead and a car fire in Rangiora on Tuesday.
Similar incidents were reported in Papatoetoe, Kawerau, Rangitaiki and Seddon.
Fire and Emergency acting national manager community readiness and recovery Tom Ronaldson said the incidents were concerning.
“We haven’t seen as many fireworks-related fires as in previous years, but all of these fires are preventable. So it’s so important people who choose to light fireworks take responsibility and do it safely.”

car fire reported on Tuesday
The warning comes as fireworks sales continue ahead of Thursday’s celebrations, with cloudy conditions and possible showers forecast across the South Island.
Ronaldson said the number of fires involving fireworks had increased over the past two years, and he hoped that trend would reverse.
People are being urged to check local fire restrictions before setting off fireworks, avoid using them in windy conditions and keep water or a hose nearby.
Fireworks should be directed away from buildings and vegetation, while used fireworks must be soaked in water before disposal.
Residents are also encouraged to notify neighbours before lighting fireworks, particularly those with pets or livestock.
Public spaces, including parks and beaches, may have restrictions or permanent bans.
“Always check local fire conditions and restrictions at checkitsalright.nz before lighting them. Your fireworks are your own responsibility,” Ronaldson said.
