Two men have been charged after a fleeing vehicle crashed into another car and brought down a traffic light at a busy Christchurch intersection early this morning.

Police were initially called to an address in Sydenham about 3.50am following a reported assault that left one person with moderate injuries.

Senior Sergeant Chris Wakelin said the alleged offender had left the scene in a vehicle before officers arrived.

Police later spotted the vehicle travelling along Colombo Street and signalled for it to stop about 4.25am, but the driver failed to pull over.

A pursuit was authorised, and police deployed road spikes near Walton Street.

Wakelin said officers abandoned the pursuit after the vehicle was spiked, but it continued towards Brougham Street.

The vehicle then crashed into a member of the public’s car at the intersection of Colombo Street and Brougham Street, also knocking down a traffic light.

The driver of the other vehicle sustained moderate injuries.

Two people from the fleeing vehicle were apprehended at the scene.

A 41-year-old man has been charged with intent to injure and resisting police. He is due to appear in the Christchurch District Court today.

A 25-year-old man has been charged with dangerous driving and failing to stop. He is scheduled to appear in the Christchurch District Court on 6 November.

Traffic management remains in place at the intersection following the crash.
