A man was reportedly left unconscious and bleeding from the head following a serious assault outside One New Zealand Stadium in Christchurch on Sunday evening.

The incident happened near the intersection of Madras Street and Tuam Street, as spectators were leaving the stadium following the Kiwis’ Rugby League World Cup match against the Cook Islands.

A witness told chrislynchmedia.com she walked past shortly after the incident and saw a man unconscious and bleeding from his head.

She said those believed to be involved had fled down Madras Street towards Moorhouse Avenue before being apprehended by police.

“The offenders ran down Madras towards Moorhouse and police got them,” the witness said.

She said she could see the police activity in the distance and described the incident as a sad ending to an otherwise enjoyable night at the rugby league.

A police spokeswoman told chrislynchmedia.com police received a report of disorder on Madras Street, near Tuam Street, at approximately 7.50pm.

She confirmed one person was injured and two people had been taken into custody.

Police have not confirmed the extent of the man’s injuries, whether charges will be laid or what led to the incident.
