Lincoln’s new town centre plaza has been formally blessed, marking the end of the first stage of a major upgrade to the township’s main street.

The first stage has brought a 40km/h speed limit to the town centre, along with new pedestrian crossings, cycling facilities, more than 50 trees and upgrades to roads, drainage, lighting and underground services.

New rain gardens will naturally treat stormwater before it flows into the Liffey Stream. Cultural design features in the plaza include split boulders, basket features inspired by hīnaki and tuna (eel) elements. Two new public car parks were also built before construction began.

Selwyn District Council’s executive director of infrastructure and property, Tim Mason, thanked residents, businesses and road users for their patience during the works.

Mayor Lydia Gliddon said the changes were already making the town centre a better place to spend time.

“The new plaza, pedestrian spaces and landscaping are helping create places where people can stop, connect and spend time, while also improving safety and accessibility for everyone using the town centre.”

She also thanked local businesses for continuing to welcome customers through the disruption.

“Lincoln is open for business, and we encourage everyone to come and enjoy the new town centre.”

AECOM designed the project and Fulton Hogan carried out the construction.

The upgrade is part of the Lincoln Town Centre Plan, first adopted in 2016 to support the town’s growth while keeping its character.

Work on the next stages is due to start at the end of October.
