The Amazing Race host Phil Keoghan has brought the international television series to Christchurch, fulfilling a promise to showcase his hometown after its rebuild following the 2011 earthquake.

Christchurch and Canterbury feature in the programme’s 39th season, putting the region’s attractions and experiences in front of millions of viewers across North America through broadcaster CBS.

Keoghan, who has travelled to more than 140 countries, was instrumental in bringing the episode to Christchurch.

“I’ve brought The Amazing Race to New Zealand to film four previous seasons and promised that once Christchurch had the opportunity to rebuild itself after the 2011 earthquake, I would return to show off our new innovative and vibrant city to the world,” Keoghan said.

He said returning home remained a highlight of his travels.

“Even after traveling to more than 140 countries, coming home to Christchurch is still one of my favourite destinations.”

Keoghan said the new stadium and Māori culture woven through the rebuilt city made it a privilege to put his hometown in the spotlight.

ChristchurchNZ Head of Destination Kath Low said the city’s inclusion offered a significant opportunity to raise its international profile.

“While Christchurch remains an important gateway to the South Island, it is increasingly recognised internationally for the unique experiences and landscapes found in the city, and surrounds. To broadcast to an audience of this size is fantastic,” Low said.

ChristchurchNZ supported the production with advice on locations and visitor experiences, local knowledge and introductions to partners across the region.

To celebrate the episode, Air New Zealand, ChristchurchNZ and destination partners have created a competition for viewers in the United States and Canada to win a trip for two to Christchurch.

The prize includes flights, accommodation, culinary experiences and attractions, with winners able to visit many of the locations and try activities featured in the episode.

Air New Zealand General Manager Americas Ben Evers-Swindell said the airline was pleased to support the programme’s Christchurch visit.

“Christchurch is a fantastic destination, with so much for visitors to discover both in the city and beyond,” Evers-Swindell said.

He said the airline’s involvement would help connect more North American visitors with the region and support the economic benefits of international tourism.

The competition opened on 30 September.
