Heavy snow across parts of the central South Island has left vehicles stuck and prompted restrictions on several major highways.

NZ Transport Agency said significant snow in the Mackenzie Basin had caused several vehicles to become stuck on State Highway 8 near Lake Pukaki on Sunday morning.

Road crews were ploughing snow to help free the stranded vehicles.

On State Highway 73 between Christchurch and the West Coast, towing vehicles are prohibited between Springfield and Castle Hill, including Porters Pass.

Snow chains are essential for motorists using the route because of snow on the highway.

Further south, area warnings are in place across several Otago routes.

Drivers are being urged to take extra care on State Highway 8 between Omarama and Tarras, including Lindis Pass, State Highway 85 between Omakau and Kyeburn, and the Crown Range Road.

NZTA said further updates would be issued as conditions developed and urged anyone travelling, particularly through inland areas, to check the latest weather and road conditions before leaving.
