A reported lightning strike affected phones and computers at Christchurch Men’s Prison just before 4pm today.
Chris Lynch Media was told alarms were activated during the electrical storm.
Christchurch Men’s Prison General Manager Jo Harrex said the prison remained safe and secure, with all staff and prisoners accounted for.
“The site did not lose power at any time. There have been some impacts to our systems, such as a number of phones and computers being down.”
Harrex said the disruption was not widespread and there was no significant damage.
“We have comprehensive processes in place to manage these events.”
She said “Christchurch Men’s Prison is operating safely and securely following an electrical storm just before 4pm this afternoon.”
