Motorists are being asked to avoid State Highway 1 near Hinds following a serious two vehicle crash.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Rangitata Highway and Frisbys Road about 4.40pm.

A police spokesperson said there were reports of injuries, but the number of people injured and the severity of their injuries had not been confirmed.

NZTA said the crash happened south of Hinds and the highway was blocked while emergency services responded.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area, delay their travel and expect delays.
