A state of emergency has been declared for the Waitaki District after heavy overnight rain caused widespread flooding, forcing people from their homes and businesses.
The district’s Emergency Operations Centre has been activated as conditions continue to deteriorate, with severe surface flooding reported across the area.
More than 20 people have self evacuated, and residents who need assistance or become stranded have been urged to call emergency services immediately.
A welfare evacuation centre has been opened at the Waitaki Event Centre on Centennial Park in Oamaru North, providing a safe and dry place for anyone unable to remain in their homes. Small pets, including dogs and cats, are also welcome at the centre.
Authorities have warned people not to drive through floodwaters, saying floodwater can be deeper and faster moving than it appears and roads may have been damaged beneath the surface.
Sandbags and sand are being delivered to the Eden Street car park, where staff will prepare them before they are made available for public collection.
Officials are urging residents to stay home unless travel is absolutely necessary, continue monitoring official updates, and check on neighbours where it is safe to do so.
