The National led Government has opened up its largest lead over the opposition in more than 18 months, according to the latest Roy Morgan poll.

The survey found support for the governing coalition of National, ACT and New Zealand First had risen to 51.5 percent, while support for Labour, the Greens and Te Pāti Māori fell to 41.5 percent.

Support for National increased 5% to 30.5%, although support for NZ First was down 0.5% to 11%, and support for ACT was down 0.5% to 10%.

Support for Labour plunged 7.5% to 26.5%, support for the Greens increased 1.5% to 12.5%, and support for Te Pāti Māori was down 0.5% to 2.5%.

A further 7% (up 2.5%) of electors supported a minor party outside Parliament.

This includes 6% (up 2%) who support Opportunity and a further 1% (up 0.5%) who support other minor parties including the NewZeal, NZ Outdoors & Freedom Party (NZOFP), Vision NZ, Conservative Party NZ, Women’s Right’s Party and the Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party.

If the result was repeated at an election, the poll suggests the Government would retain a parliamentary majority.

The poll also pointed to growing support for minor parties, with the Opportunities Party reaching a level that would be enough to enter Parliament.

Roy Morgan chief executive Michele Levine said the Government had strengthened its position considerably during May.

“Support for the National led Government has surged and is now 10 percentage points ahead of the Labour led Parliamentary Opposition,” Levine said.

She said National had made gains while Labour had fallen to its lowest level of support since late 2024.

The survey also found more New Zealanders believe the country is moving in the right direction compared with previous months, although a majority still believe New Zealand is heading in the wrong direction.

The poll was conducted between April 27 and May 24 and surveyed 870 voters nationwide by landline and mobile phone
