One person has been taken to hospital following an incident at Kaiapoi High School this afternoon.

The school emailed parents at about 2.15pm advising the school had been placed into lockdown.

“All students are safe,” the email said.

Senior Sergeant Hamish Keer-Keer from the Canterbury police District Command Centre told chrislynchmedia.com police responded to a report of a disorder at the school.

“The school has initiated a lockdown as per their protocols.”

Keer-Keer said one person had been taken to hospital for medical assessment.

A police spokeswoman later confirmed the person was transported to hospital by ambulance and officers had since left the scene.

Students told chrislynchmedia.com the lockdown had ended before the school day finished.

Acting Principal Nathan Sandes said the lockdown was triggered after “an incident involving a student acting violently and erratically on the back field at second break.”

“It was deemed necessary to put the school in lockdown to keep our students safe and out of harm’s way,” Sandes said.

“Our students responded positively and followed directions of our teachers. We are very proud of them for taking this incident seriously.”

One student told chrislynchmedia.com a female student appeared intoxicated and was acting aggressively before the lockdown began.

The student said teachers approached the girl after students reported feeling unsafe.

The student alleged the girl then became physically aggressive toward staff.

St John said it was notified at 2:03pm of an incident at Ohoka Road in Kaiapoi.

“One ambulance and one operations manager responded to the scene. Our ambulance staff treated one patient and transported them to Christchurch Public Hospital in a moderate condition.”
