A crash on State Highway 8 near Lake Pukaki has closed the road this morning after a vehicle came off the road in icy conditions.

A Police spokesperson said the single-vehicle crash on Tekapo-Twizel Road was reported at around 8.20am.

The crash occurred between Rhoboro Road and Pukaki Canal Road.

A St John spokesperson said one ambulance responded to the scene, where staff assessed five patients.

All were in minor condition and none required transport to hospital.

A New Zealand Transport Agency spokesperson said the road may be closed for about an hour while it is cleared, and asked motorists to avoid the area or delay their travel.

An update will be provided when the road status changes.

A general ice warning is also in place across the wider SH8 route this morning. Police urged motorists to take care and drive to the conditions.
