A small dog caught up in a distressing family harm case is now safe, loved, and thriving in the care of the SPCA.

The dog, now called Otis, was seized following a Christchurch court appearance involving a man charged with animal cruelty, resisting police, and escaping custody.

During the hearing, a police prosecutor raised concerns about the welfare of the dog at the centre of the animal cruelty charge.

When questioned in court, the defendant said the dog had been left alone at accommodation where he had been staying.

Police quickly located Otis and placed him in the care of SPCA.

Chris Lynch Media can report Otis is now in good spirits and being cared for by foster families, staff, and volunteers who have rallied around the small dog following his ordeal.

An SPCA Christchurch spokeswoman said “despite the circumstances that brought him there,  Otis had settled in remarkably well, and was enjoying the safety, warmth, and companionship now surrounding him.”

“We’ve certainly been overwhelmed by the number of people wanting to give Otis a safe and loving home.”

Chris Lynch, who is an SPCA ambassador, visited the SPCA Christchurch office on Wednesday and said Otis was relaxed, affectionate, and full of energy, soaking up every bit of attention from those caring for him.

The SPCA became involved after police passed on information about the dog’s situation.
