A Christchurch art school is entering a new chapter under family ownership, with plans to rebuild enrolments, introduce new courses and expand opportunities for students to sell their work.

Matthew and Rebecca Nolan took ownership of Art Metro on 17 August, almost 20 years after the school was established.

The couple said they saw an opportunity to breathe new life into a business that had thrived before Covid, while preserving the supportive culture built by previous owners Simon and Nadine Walmisley.

“We saw an opportunity to recharge an amazing business which thrived prior to Covid. Right from the outset, communication and dealing with Simon and Nadine just felt right. It is such a good fit.”

Art Metro currently has about 270 students, down from more than 400 per term before Covid.

The school offers individual tuition in small classes of up to ten students, covering oils, acrylics, pastels, watercolours and sketching.

Students range in age from five to 86.

Rebecca said one of Art Metro’s strengths was the mix of ages, backgrounds and abilities.

“The camaraderie between students is heartwarming. We liken the business to Cheers, where everybody knows your name.”

The Nolans want to carefully grow the school back towards its pre Covid enrolment while protecting the culture that already exists.

New ideas include digital art and abstract classes, along with hen nights, corporate functions and family paint parties.

The business also sells art supplies and operates a small gallery where student work can be displayed and sold.

That side of the business is also expected to grow, with the Nolans wanting to support students from their first piece of work through to selling their art if that is their goal.

The couple have six children, with several expected to become involved in the business.

Their daughter Samantha, who is studying at Ara Cook School, is interested in eventually establishing a café at the school, while Karusha and Fletcher are expected to help with other parts of the operation.

Rebecca said she and Matthew had long wanted a business they could build together as a family.

“I work full time for Kai Pai travelling the country, so I will help in the background while Matt will be the face of Art Metro.”

The school’s 20th anniversary is due next year, with plans still being developed.

Rebecca said any celebration would likely recognise the school’s legacy while bringing former students and friends back together.
