A van driver has been seriously injured in a collision with a freight train.
A St John Ambulance spokesperson said that emergency services are currently at the scene of the crash involving a vehicle and train, north of Kaikoura.
“The crash was reported about 9.50am, between Hapuku and Waipapa Bay. The driver of the van is reported to be in a serious condition. No other injuries have been reported,” the spokesperson said.
The driver has been airlifted to Christchurch Hospital.
State Highway 1 remains open, but there may be delays while emergency services work at the scene.
EGM Freight and Rolling Stock Operations spokesperson Paul Ashton told chrislynchmedia.com that the collision was between the vehicle and train travelling south to Christchurch on the Main North Line at a private level crossing protected by stop signs.
“In line with our standard practice our driver will be given leave, and all of our staff involved will be offered support from KiwiRail,” Ashton said.
A local at the scene has told chrislynchmedia.com that the van was a NZ Post vehicle.
Comment has been sought from NZ Post and police.
