A person has been critically injured following a serious assault in Amberley in the Hurunui District.
Police were called to an address on Racecourse Road at about 10.25pm after a report a person had been seriously assaulted.
Detective Senior Sergeant Karen Simmons said the victim was taken to hospital in a critical condition.
“The victim was transported to hospital with critical injuries and is currently undergoing surgery.”
Police are speaking with one person in relation to the incident and are not seeking anyone else at this time.
“A scene examination is underway at the address, and enquiries into the circumstances of the incident are ongoing.”
A nearby resident told chrislynchmedia.com they noticed a “big police presence” last night.
“The Westpac rescue helicopter was there from 11pm till midnight with the local fire crew, two ambulances and a first responder.
“There were armed police at the gate this morning saying a guy was mysteriously injured last night.”
