West Coast Road State Highway 73 at Arthurs Pass has been closed in both directions following a serious crash involving a motorcycle and a car this afternoon.

Police were notified about 1pm and initial information indicates there were serious injuries.

The Serious Crash Unit has been advised and the highway is expected to remain closed for some time while emergency services work at the scene.

Motorists are being urged to avoid the area and expect delays.
