National’s West Coast–Tasman MP Maureen Pugh has announced she will retire from politics at the 2026 General Election, bringing to an end more than a decade in public office.

Mrs Pugh said it had been a privilege to represent the West Coast and Tasman, first as a list MP and later as the electorate MP after winning the seat in 2023.

She described her time in Parliament as an honour, following nine years as Mayor of Westland, where she was the district’s first woman mayor.

Mrs Pugh said she had always sought to be a strong advocate for the region in Wellington, with a focus on regional development, infrastructure and conservation across both the West Coast and Tasman districts.

“The Coast is particularly special to me being my home, and my hope is that whoever follows in my footsteps will continue to cherish its uniqueness, unspoilt beauty and special character,” she said.

She also acknowledged her role as Assistant Speaker of the House, which she said she had greatly enjoyed, and confirmed she would continue in the position through the remainder of the parliamentary term.

Looking ahead, Mrs Pugh said she planned to spend more time with her family and enjoy a slower pace of life once she leaves Parliament.

The National Party’s candidate for the West Coast–Tasman electorate at the 2026 election will be announced at a later date.
