A new interim chief executive has been appointed at Selwyn District Council.

The council confirmed Steve Gibling had taken on the role to provide leadership as the organisation navigates major government reforms.

Mayor Lydia Gliddon said the appointment ensured continuity and confidence during a critical period for the council.

“Steve brings strong leadership and a deep understanding of our district. His experience will help guide the organisation through these important processes while maintaining our focus on delivering for Selwyn communities,” Gliddon said.

Gibling had been acting chief executive since 19 January and will remain in the interim role until a permanent chief executive is appointed following a recruitment process.

He said he was committed to supporting the council, staff, and the wider community through the transition.

“I’m honoured to take on this role and work alongside our dedicated team. My focus will be on ensuring stability and delivering on the priorities that matter most to Selwyn residents,” Gibling said.

Gibling brings more than 25 years of leadership experience across local government, the not for profit sector, and tertiary education. His background includes senior roles in community and recreation services such as parks, aquatics, arts, culture and heritage, libraries, and venues and events.

He previously served as interim chief executive at Buller District Council and has held senior leadership roles at Invercargill City Council and the University of Canterbury.

Gibling joined Selwyn District Council’s executive leadership team in 2024, supporting strategic people, culture, engagement, and capability programmes.

The council said recruitment for a permanent chief executive would begin shortly, with recruitment agencies expected to provide proposals for council consideration as soon as possible.
