Selwyn District Council chief executive Sharon Mason has announced her intention to step down from the role.

Mason will continue leading the organisation until an interim chief executive is appointed, a move aimed at ensuring stability and continuity of services.

Council will consider Mason’s resignation and the appointment of an interim chief executive at an extraordinary meeting next week. Decisions around recruiting a permanent replacement are expected to be made at a council meeting on 21 January.

Selwyn Mayor Lydia Gliddon paid tribute to Mason’s leadership, saying she had guided the organisation through a period of significant change.

“Sharon has led this organisation through a period of significant change during her tenure, improving and strengthening internal processes across council and positioning the organisation for a successful future,” Gliddon said.

“She oversaw major strategic initiatives, including a financial hygiene programme, the establishment of Selwyn Water Limited, and provided steady leadership through complex and demanding challenges. Her dedication and care for staff have been evident throughout, and we are deeply grateful for her service.”

Mason said she believed the timing was right for new leadership.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here and it has been a privilege to work with such talented, dedicated, and hardworking people,” Mason said.

“With councillor induction complete and the new council ready to set its strategic direction, I believe now is the right time to allow a new leader to guide the organisation through its next chapter.”

Gliddon thanked Mason for her contribution to the district.

“We thank Sharon for her service, integrity, and contribution to Selwyn, and wish her well in her next chapter,” she said.

Council said no further comment would be made at this time.
