The finish line is finally in sight. Public consultation on the Bill to ban commercial greyhound racing has begun, and greyhounds need your voice right now.
This is our last chance to end greyhound racing in New Zealand forever.
Public consultation on the Bill to ban commercial greyhound racing closes 9 January, and every single submission counts.
Greyhounds desperately need your help to cross the finish line.
It takes only a moment, and without public backing, this opportunity could slip away.

Last December, the Government announced its intention to end commercial greyhound racing in Aotearoa. Now, it’s over to all of us to ensure that intention becomes law.
Why This Matters
To make the ban a reality, the Racing Industry (Closure of Greyhound Racing Industry)Amendment Bill must pass in Parliament. If it does, commercial racing will end on 1 August 2026 – opening a new chapter where greyhounds can live as they should: safe, loved, and
free from the risks of racing.
After more than a decade of independent reviews revealing systemic welfare issues and inadequate attempts at reform, SPCA is asking you to join us in saying no more chances. In the most recent racing season, 16 dogs died as a result of racing, making it the deadliest season since the industry was put on notice. As long as racing continues, dogs will inevitably be injured and some dogs will die.
The World Is Moving On
The world is turning away from greyhound racing. Following New Zealand’s announcement, Wales, Scotland and Tasmania are moving towards bans of their own, and momentum continues to build. We are leading the way – and we must keep going.
Greyhounds will Not Disappear
A common claim from the industry is that banning racing will make greyhounds “disappear”. That’s simply not true. Dalmatians no longer run beside fire trucks, and whippets are now adored as family companions rather than racers. Breeds evolve as society does, and
greyhounds already make exceptional pets.
