A popular brand of coloured sand sold in New Zealand has been urgently recalled over concerns it may contain asbestos.
The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) said a voluntary recall was underway for EC Rainbow Sand (1.3kg) and Creatistics – Coloured Sand (1kg) following independent testing in Australia that confirmed asbestos contamination in similar products.
Product Safety Spokesperson Ian Caplin said precautionary action was being taken while testing continued in New Zealand.
“We are taking immediate precautionary action while we establish the extent and risk of the potentially contaminated product,” Caplin said.
“We urge anyone who has bought these products, either for personal use or potential use in a school or other setting, to act immediately. Stop using the sand, contain it, secure it in a safe place and arrange for safe disposal through licensed professionals.”
The affected products were sold at Paper Plus, Hobby Land, NZ School Shop, Office Products Depot, Discount Office, Acquire and Qizzle. Some online retailers may also have stocked the items.
“Asbestos is a serious health hazard and we are working with Health New Zealand, the Ministry of Education and WorkSafe to provide guidance for consumers and educational facilities,” Caplin said.
Consumers are advised to stop using the product immediately, place the sand in a sealed container, and store it securely away from people. WorkSafe recommends engaging a Class A licensed asbestos removalist for safe disposal.
Schools and early childhood centres that have used the sand have been told to block off affected areas and not to vacuum or sweep where the sand was present. They should contact a licensed asbestos assessor or removalist for immediate advice and notify the Ministry of Education.
MBIE said anyone concerned about potential exposure should contact Health New Zealand for advice.
Further information, including a list of licensed removalists and recall details, is available on the Product Safety New Zealand and WorkSafe websites.
