State Highway 1 near the Hapuku River bridge, north of Kaikōura, is currently blocked following a serious crash involving a campervan this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 1:20pm after the vehicle rolled, reportedly due to strong winds affecting the area.

St John was notified of this crash, responding with one ambulance.

Two patients were assessed at the scene and transported to Kaikoura Medical Centre in a moderate condition.

Chris Lynch Media has been told houses are being evacuated due to fires in the area.

Around the same time, police were alerted to a second single-vehicle crash near the intersection of Schoolhouse Road and Old Beach Road in Kaikōura Flat, where another campervan rolled.

No serious injuries have been reported, and the intersection remains open.

Travellers are advised to delay journeys if possible while strong winds persist in the region.
