A person has died after a house fire at a Rakaia property overnight, and a two year old has been critically injured.

A police spokeswoman told Chris Lynch Media emergency services were called to the address about 11.15pm.

“One person was located deceased a short time later, and another was transported to hospital in critical condition.”

“The death will be referred to the Coroner, and enquiries are ongoing” the police spokeswoman said.

A St John spokesperson told Chris Lynch Media, they responded with an ambulance, rapid response unit,  first response unit, a PRIME vehicle, manager and one helicopter to the scene.

“Our crews assessed and treated one patient who was airlifted to Christchurch hospital in a critical condition.” 

Police are investigating the circumstances of the fire.
