Police have responded to a single-vehicle crash involving a stock truck on Karaka Road, north of Waikari in North Canterbury.

The incident occurred at approximately 12:25pm this afternoon.

The truck, which was carrying a load of sheep, was involved in the crash under extremely windy weather conditions.

While there were no reports of injuries to the driver or any other individuals, it is confirmed that around 20 sheep died at the scene.

Vets have been called to attend to the remaining livestock, and animal welfare is being monitored.

A witness told Chris Lynch Media that multiple sheep were seen running along the road following the crash, describing the situation as chaotic.

The road is partially blocked, and traffic management is currently in place while emergency services and recovery crews work to clear the scene.

Motorists are advised to expect delays and to drive with caution in the area.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
