Heavy snow forced the closure of two key alpine passes in the central South Island today.

State Highway 7, including Lewis Pass, was closed at 4.15pm between Springs Junction and the Hanmer Springs turnoff at State Highway 7A. Motorists were advised to delay travel or avoid the area.

The closure came after State Highway 73 between Otira and Arthur’s Pass was shut earlier in the afternoon.

Snow is also affecting other parts of the South Island. State Highway 94, the Milford Road, will close at 5pm today between the Hollyford Road Junction and the Donne River Bridge, with further closures likely in the coming days.

Authorities said updates on road conditions would be provided later today. Travellers are urged to check the official Journey Planner website for the latest information.
