State Highway 1 near Cheviot in North Canterbury has reopened following a truck crash that closed the road for several hours this morning.

Emergency services were called to Domett Road about 8.10am after a truck crashed, blocking the highway between Old Main Road and Nonoti Road.

A St John spokesperson said a rescue helicopter responded to the scene and airlifted two people to Christchurch Hospital — one in moderate condition and the other with minor injuries.

Contractors were brought in to help clear the truck and debris from the highway.

Photos sent to chrislynchmedia.com by a family member of one of the injured show the truckd damaged.

The injured man’s sister said he was the passenger in the vehicle, not the driver.

“He’s got moderate injuries, mostly a sore back, but he’s getting checked over at the hospital,” she said.
