State Highway 7 between Hanmer Springs and Springs Junction has been closed overnight and will reopen at 7am on Saturday.
The overnight closure is required as crews continue work to fully reopen the road following a slip last month near the Roirdan Creek Bridge.
The incident initially forced a full closure of the route between Springs Junction and Island Hills.
Since then, traffic has been limited to a single lane under traffic management.
Geotechnical assessments have now been completed and work will begin next week to remove the remaining slip hazard.
This will involve rock scaling, clearing vegetation, and modifying bunding in the area, NZTA said.
Motorists are advised to plan ahead, expect delays, and consider alternative routes where possible.
Authorities have reminded road users to allow extra travel time through the area.
