Christchurch City Council has signed off on a package of road changes along Moorhouse Avenue, one of the city’s busiest transport routes.

At a meeting today, councillors approved intersection upgrades at Barbadoes and Madras Streets, which the Council said aim to improve access and safety for people walking, cycling and driving.

Moorhouse Avenue carries around 46,000 vehicles a day and connects the central city with key education and event areas, including Ara Institute and the new stadium scheduled to open in April 2026.

The approved changes include:

  • A new staggered pedestrian crossing with a waiting area in the central median at the Moorhouse Avenue, Gasson Street and Madras Street intersection
  • Priority crossings and speed humps on slip lanes connecting Gasson Street and Moorhouse Avenue
  • Retention of the north-west slip lane from Moorhouse to Madras Street, with a priority crossing on a raised platform
  • Another new staggered pedestrian crossing at the intersection of Moorhouse Avenue, Barbadoes Street and Waltham Road
  • A speed hump and priority crossing on the slip lane from Moorhouse Avenue to Waltham Road
  • Repainting of road markings, including cycle lanes

The Council said the work is part of wider plans to manage traffic flows and pedestrian movement, particularly as the city anticipates increased activity around the stadium once completed.
