Selwyn residents who suffered hardship or damage to their property during the recent floods can apply to the Selwyn District Council for financial support.

The council has opened the Mayoral Relief Fund for Waikirikiri Selwyn residents affected by recent flooding who have not been able to access other support such as insurance or government funding.

A funds allocation panel will assess applications and allocate funding.

The fund was boosted by $50,000 from National Emergency Management Agency Minister Mark Mitchell. The Minister visited the region on 1-2 May, to see the damage first-hand and was approached by Mayor Sam Broughton to contribute to the Selwyn Mayoral Relief Fund.

Broughton said the fund is another way for the council to help those affected by the flooding.

“Our Civil Defence team and local volunteers did a fantastic job of looking after people during the flooding and afterwards. We have also seen government and other agencies providing support. This fund is limited but will support those who have suffered hardship,” Broughton said.

Affected residents can apply for assistance in three categories, Welfare ($1000 per individual), Clean-up ($1500 per individual or group) and Resilience ($1000 per community group). The third category was included for any activity that would help communities prepare for future severe weather events.

The fund will be closed when the available amount has been allocated.

More information, criteria, and an application form can be found on the Mayoral Relief Fund page.
