Passenger jet crashes at airport in India

Air India has confirmed that one of its international flights was involved in an accident shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad.

Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 aircraft bound for London Gatwick, departed at 1.38pm with 242 passengers and crew on board. The airline said the incident occurred soon after departure.

Of those on board, 169 were Indian nationals, 53 were British nationals, seven were Portuguese nationals and one was a Canadian national.

Injured passengers have been taken to nearby hospitals. The extent of injuries is currently unclear.

Air India said it has launched a dedicated passenger hotline, 1800 5691 444, to provide support and information to families.
