1pm: Several key South Island highways have now reopened following heavy snowfall, but road crews remain active in the region.
An NZTA spokesperson said State Highway 73 from Otira to Springfield, which includes Arthur’s Pass and Porters Pass, is now open to traffic. State Highway 85 from Kyeburn to Palmerston has also reopened.
“Teams are still working to extract stranded vehicles on State Highway 8 between Fairlie and Twizel, with the aim of reopening the road later today,” the spokesperson said.
A slip at Gorge Stream is also being cleared on State Highway 7, and the stretch between Hanmer Springs and Springs Junction is expected to reopen once that is completed.
State Highway 87 between Mosgiel and Kyeburn remains closed for now, but crews are working to reopen it.
“While conditions are improving, we’re urging motorists to drive to the conditions, check the latest updates before travelling, and be prepared for delays,” the NZTA spokesperson said.
