Authorities will decide at midday today whether to lift or partially lift the state of emergency declared for Christchurch following severe flooding last week.

Christchurch City Council said the situation remained stable overnight, with no major developments.

A review at 12pm will assess whether conditions have improved enough to downgrade the emergency response.

In Christchurch, four roads remain closed: Empire Road from Main North Road, Lower Styx Road from number 980 to the lagoon, and both Henderson Road and Cashmere Road, which are affected by a managed release of water from stormwater basins. The basins are draining slowly as expected.

In Banks Peninsula, a number of roads remain closed, although most are expected to reopen early next week. Lighthouse Road and Bossu Road from number 220 to Lands End Road are likely to stay closed for longer due to a bridge washout.

A landslip on Lighthouse Road in Akaroa continues to be monitored closely. Council staff said there had been no changes in the last 24 hours.

Akaroa’s wastewater issue is also being actively managed. A temporary pump is now preventing wastewater from entering the harbour. The system requires constant monitoring, so staff will remain onsite around the clock.

“Longer term, we need to replace the pipe, and planning for that is now underway,” the council said. Residents are being asked to limit their use of the wastewater system until the issue is resolved.
