Christchurch City Councillors have accused their colleagues of “grandstanding” over the Wheels to Wings cycleway.
Harewood Councillor Aaron Keown and Waimairi Councillor Sam MacDonald are calling on the council to scrap the plans saying the consultation process is disingenuous.
They’ll put a motion at a Christchurch City Council on Thursday.
The plan includes reducing Harewood Road from four lanes to two lanes and removing a number of on-street car parks.

MacDonald said the 19 million dollar cycleway is over-engineered and should be ditched for a cheaper option.
Councillor for Heathcote Ward Sara Templeton wrote on her Facebook page last night “Crs MacDonald and Keown want a cheap flimsy cycleway that won’t keep kids on bikes safe or encourage cycling uptake and help meet the climate challenge.”
“These councillors are ideologically opposed to transport choice and it’s time that we stood up and said enough.”

“Enough of the grandstanding, enough of the deliberate misinformation, enough denying the evidence, enough of Christchurch kids having to rely on parents’ cars to get to school or friend’s homes.”
“Enough of the lack of freedom of choice for those who don’t want to or can’t drive. Residents deserve to be safe on our roads.”
Councillor for Papanui Mike Davidson said “I’m not surprised with this attempt to cancel this cycleway. “
“It has become clear this term that there are a number of Councillors who simply oppose cycleways because they think that’s the popular thing to do.”
Councillor for Fendalton James Gough said he will support the motion by Aaron Keown and Sam MacDonald.
“I think it’s a waste of money which the community don’t want.”
