One person is in a critical condition after their car hit a cow in Southland this morning,

Police say the incident happened State Highway One in Dacre.

Emergency services were called to the scene just before seven this morning.

A St John Ambulance spokesman says the patient was taken to Dunedin Hospital by helicopter.

The road is closed, with diversions in place.

Motorists should avoid the area if possible.
