Updated road closures in Canterbury

Due to the continuous rain in some areas of Canterbury, there are still existing risks and officials are advising to only travel when necessary. Here are the updated road closures per council district:

Timaru

Road closure: Kellands Hill Road from Pages Road to Washdyke Flat Road. Due to flooding and motor vehicle accident. 

Washdyke Flat Road is flooded but open, drive with caution.

Ashburton

Update on bridge closures:

  • Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road (Route 72) – between Forks Rd and Pudding Hill Rd

  • Double Hill Run Road (Redcliffe Stream)

  • Lower Downs Road (Ballantynes Bridge) – Mayfield Klondyke Rd to Blairs Rd

Updated Road Closures:

  • Melcombe Street – between SH1 and Buckleys Terrace

  • Thompsons Track – From Ashburton Staveley Road to Mayfield Valetta Road

  • Thompsons Track – From Jamiesons Road to Winchmore Lauriston RoadT

  • Tramway Road – From Thompsons Track to Locheads Road

  • Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road – From Intersection of Tinwald Westerfield Mayfield Road to Pudding Hill Road

  • Ashburton Staveley Road – Between SH77 and Forks Road

  • Blackford Rd & Double Hill Run Road – From SH77

  • Ashburton Gorge Road – from Stour River Bridge to Hakatere Potts Road

  • Barkers Road – between Holmes and Back Track Road

  • Lyndhurst Road – Between Line Road and Methven Chertsey Road

  • Methven Chertsey Road – between Lyndhurst Road and Line Road

  • Forks Road – Between Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road and Ashburton Staveley Road

  • Mt Hutt Station Road – Between SH77 and SH77

  • Lowerdowns Road – Between Mayfield Klondyke and Blairs Road

  • Anama Settlement Road – Between Mayfield Klondyke and Blairs Road

  • River Road – From Beach Road East to Wakanui School Road

Sunshine Bridge closures:

  • Hackthorne Rd – Between Barford Rd and Lismore Mayfield Road

  • Winslow Rd – Between Swamp Rd and Hinds Lismore Road

  • Boundary Rd – Between Isleworth and Lynnford Road

Waimakariri

Council staff will be working to re-open roads as soon as possible.

The Diversion Bridge on South Eyre Rd, Harewood Rd Bridge and Poyntzs Rd Bridge will be inspected by bridge engineers at first light to determine if they can be opened again to traffic.  All other bridges across the district will be inspected for potential damage.

  • All Fords across the District are closed

  • Sections of Woodside Road near Oxford

  • Tippings Road

  • Patersons Road (Cust)

  • Kenneys Hill Road

  • The Harewood Road Bridge where it crosses the Eyre River

  • Mount Thomas Road east of Kennedys Hill Road (restricted access)

  • Mairaki Road (East of intersection with McIntoshs Road)

  • Lilly Road/Oxford Road intersection

  • Mount Thomas Road/Oxford Road/Swannanoa Road intersection

  • Dalziels Road/Oxford Road intersection

  • Merton Road/Oxford Road intersection

  • Priors Road/Merton Road intersection

    Bridges

  • Poyntz Rd Bridge

  • Diversion Bridge on South Eyre Road

  • Harewood Road Bridge

Hurunui 

Latest Road status update, 8pm Sunday May 30th

CLOSED:

  • Hurunui Bluff Rd – (Continual rock fall and slips.)

  • Powers Rd Closed (Closed by Waitohi Peaks Rd)

  • Bakers Rd Closed

  • Lake Sumner Rd closed By Waitohi Domain. ***

  • Homeview Rd Closed

  • Medbury Rd Closed (By Gilbert & Peaks)

  • *** LAKE SUMNER ROAD AND BLACK HUT BRIDGE – CLOSED

  • due to rising river levels. This road is now closed and cordoned off from the southern end. (It is currently unsafe for our crew to cross the bridge and close from the opposite side. Do not attempt to cross the bridge. It is predicted that the water will breach the deck and accumulated debris may cause significant damage. The Bridge will be re-opened and reassessed when it is safe to do so.

    IN ADDITION:

  • Horsley Terrace Rd – River is flowing through the paddock and flooding over the Road- TM Flooding signs.

  • Leader Rd Rockfall- Signed up and will be cleared first thing tomorrow.

  • All fords have been closed

  • Surface flooding throughout the district.
