Charteris Bay Yacht Club has been praised after members helped rescue people off a boat that caught fire this afternoon.

Eight people and a dog escaped injuries after the launch they were on caught fire in Lyttelton Harbour near Quail Island.

Emergency services received a report around 12:45pm.

Fire and Emergency responded with the help of a Coastguard vessel.

Rescued passenger Candice French told Chris Lynch 8 adults and a small dog were aboard – “they were shaken up but otherwise fine.”

It was a private trip out on the water. Two passengers jumped in the water.

“It all happened so quickly but we are incredibly appreciative to those who came to our rescue.”

“Charteris Bay Yacht Club were there and come just in the nick of time.”

“She said even the dog had his wee life jacket on.”

Andrea Bryan said she “watched it all unfold while having lunch at Fishermen’s wharf. It was frightening to watch but very happy to hear everyone onboard was ok.”
