Christchurch police are hunting for the driver who failed to stop early this morning.

A spokeswoman says police observed a vehicle being driven dangerously near Ilam Road around 2.40am and signalled the vehicle to stop.

She said the vehicle failed to stop and fled.

Police followed the vehicle briefly before it was abandoned due to the nature of driving.

The vehicle was later located near Watford Street and spikes were deployed but the driver drove over the spikes and fled.

Enquiries are ongoing to locate the driver of the vehicle.
