Snow is falling in the Ashburton area this morning.

Metservice says heavy snow may disrupt travel in affected areas today.

It says Canterbury foothills and inland ranges about and south of the Rakaia river could experience a period of heavy snow.

Expect 10 to 20cm to accumulate above 500 metres with lesser amounts down to 300 metres.
