Chris Lynch Media understands the student was taken to hospital by private car and not by St John Ambulance.
St John said it didn’t have any record of the incident.
However, the police spokeswoman said a youth is scheduled to appear in the Greymouth Youth Court on 24 July.
In a short statement the school said “there was an incident at school this morning before classes began.
“It was responded to promptly and has now been referred to the police.
“We want to reassure you that students are safe, and school is continuing as normal.
If students have any concerns, they can talk to their mentor teachers or any member of our staff.”
