A woman has died in police custody in Christchurch this morning.
Superintendent Tony Hill, Canterbury District Commander, said the woman was found unresponsive in her cell at around 6.50am.
“Police immediately notified St John and officers also provided medical assistance. Sadly, attempts to revive the woman were unsuccessful,” Hill said.
Police are making enquiries into the circumstances of the death. The matter will be referred to the Coroner and the Independent Police Conduct Authority.
