Christchurch welcomed the Year of the Dragon with its annual Lunar New Year Parade, which made a vibrant return to the central business district.
The city buzzed with excitement as locals and visitors came together to celebrate the auspicious occasion, marking it with an array of colourful costumes, traditional dancers, lions, and, prominently, dragons, embodying the spirit of the celebration.
The festivities commenced at the Bridge of Remembrance with the eye-dotting ceremony of the parade’s new Dragon, a significant ritual to awaken the dragon and bring it to life.
This year’s dragon, notable for being the longest in the South Island, captivated the audience with its majestic appearance and intricate details.
Following the opening ceremony, the parade embarked on its journey, through Cashel and High Street Mall.
Spectators lined the route, eagerly watching the procession of performers and cultural displays that brought the streets to life.
The parade concluded in Cathedral Square.
The Lunar New Year Parade in Christchurch not only celebrated the beginning of a new year but also highlighted the city’s diverse culture and the strong bond within the community.
