Volunteer firefighters from across the South Island are preparing to put their skills, speed and teamwork to the test at a major firefighting competition in Rangiora.

The UFBA South Island Waterway Challenge is set to take place at Dudley Park in Rangiora on Saturday 14 February 2026, with the public invited to attend free of charge.

Hosted by the United Fire Brigades’ Association, the event will bring together volunteer and career firefighters from around the region to compete in a fast paced and highly technical challenge designed to mirror real emergency response situations.

The Waterway Challenge will test core firefighting skills used every day, including hose handling, pump operation, communication, teamwork and precision under pressure.

Crews will race against the clock to complete a demanding course, giving spectators a close look at the training and professionalism required to respond safely and effectively to emergencies.

UFBA President Lesina Walden said the event was about more than competition.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for the public to see just how skilled our firefighters are. The challenge reflects the training and teamwork that firefighters use when responding to emergencies, particularly building and vegetation fires, in our communities.

Teams from volunteer brigades across the South Island, including the Rangiora Volunteer Fire Brigade, will compete, giving locals the opportunity to support their own firefighters as they go head to head with crews from other districts.

The event will be held in a family friendly environment, with organisers encouraging the community to come along, enjoy the atmosphere and support the firefighters who serve their region.
