Strong winds continued to lash much of the South Island this morning, with contractors responding to fallen trees and damaged signage on key highways.

Flooding was reported on State Highway 6 in Central Otago and surface flooding on State Highway 73 between Kumara Junction and Arthur’s Pass.

Roading contractors have been called out to clear hazards, while authorities are urging drivers to take extra care. A warning is in place for Canterbury, particularly for those driving light or high sided vehicles.

MetService’s red strong wind warning for Canterbury, west of State Highway 1, remains in place until 3pm. This is the highest level of warning, with people advised to avoid travel due to dangerous driving conditions.

Heavy rain warnings also remain in force across several parts of the South Island.
