Under fire owner of C1 cafe announces “long break following increasing allegations of bullying and mistreatment of staff

C1 cafe Owner Sam Crofskey

The owner of Christchurch café C1 has “decided” to take a “long break” following increasing accusations of poor treatment from former workers, including front of house staff and chefs.

Many of them alleged Sam Crofskey of refusing breaks, asking highly personal questions in interviews and reducing staff to tears.

They reported he indulged in belittling behaviour and bullying - allegations he said were "extremely distressing" and "unsubstantiated"

Newstalk ZB’s Chris Lynch asked Crofskey to appear on his radio show to answer the allegations, but he declined saying he was releasing a Facebook statement.

“I’ve just made a post on Facebook, which should clearly let you know where I am right now. I hope this is enough for you as I have a busy week ahead of me and won’t be speaking to media further.”

In a post made tonight on the C1 Cafe Facebook page, Crofskey wrote “after seventeen years of owning and working at C1, I’ve decided to take a long break to reflect on the conversations of the past week.”

“During this time I will be taking professional advice around workplace culture and will assess my fit in the company.”

He said “I’ve always valued our team, and I want everyone who works with us to feel valued. This has been an immensely upsetting time for everyone.”

“While I am away the company will be run by my manager Dale. Dale has been with us for 8 years and she always does a great job.”

“The past week has been a very challenging time for our 25 staff, some of whom have had to face very negative comments.”

“Our staff will continue to do an excellent job delivering the coffee, food and service that C1 has become famous for and we are looking at ways to support them through this tough time.”

In a Facebook post made today by a former worker, she claimed “most of my time at C1 was filled with tears, anxiety, stress and depression.”

Another person who was interviewed for a job by Sam, said the interview was inappropriate.

“At the start he told me that he wasn't looking forward to the interview and that he didn't want to meet me. He explained that's because I'd sit there and lie straight to his face by telling him all the things he wanted to hear.”

Employment NZ has not received any complaints about C1 Espresso or its owner Sam Crofsky.
