Crews from Christchurch City station and two crews from ANZAC station attended the scene.
Occupants were able to self evacuate, but two people were taken to Christchurch Hospital.
Several residents told chrislynchmedia.com they heard an explosion before fire crews arrived.
One resident said “my house is 100 metres away and the house shook. It was a massive bang followed by a few smaller ones.”
The street has been blocked off by police.
A fire investigator is expected to be at the scene tomorrow morning, but the spokeswoman said it was too early to determine how the fire started.
