Two people have died in a motorcycle crash in Timaru this evening.

Emergency services were called to Evans Street, Maori Hill at 7.45PM.

The crash happened outside the Baywatch Motor Lodge Motel.

Owner Ray said he went outside to see what happened and emergency services were already at the scene.

A motorcycle was lying on the ground in a pretty smashed-up condition he said.

“It’s just awful to think this has happened, particularly at this time of the year.”

Fire and Emergency crews attended the scene, along with police.

Both riders were not wearing protective gear or helmets when the crash happened.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said they couldn’t comment on the incident and said police would issue a statement.

A police spokesperson said inquiries into the circumstances of the crash are underway.

Police are expected to release more details later this evening.

New Zealand Transport Agency said State Highway One has been closed between Trafalgar Street and Beverley Road.

“Motorists should follow instructions from emergency services on-site.

The Serious Crash Unit is attending, and the road will likely remain closed for some time to allow them to conduct investigations.”
