“She has left a hole in the walking community” Tributes for woman killed in E-Scooter crash

Friends and colleagues of a Christchurch woman killed while riding an e-scooter in Linwood have paid tribute to the much loved local.

Race walking judge Kathryn Ruth Fraser, aged 57, from Christchurch died when the e-scooter she was on collided with a van at the intersection of Avonside Drive and Linwood Avenue in Christchurch on 30 August.

One of her friends said “She was indeed an amazing person”

Canterbury Race Walkers Association president Rozie Robinson told Chris Lynch Media Kathryn was a fair, knowledgeable, well loved and valued member of the race walking community and athletics community.

“She was a judge at the Commonwealth games where she only applied as a volunteer, but was given the opportunity to be a walks judge.

“She judged at numerous Oceania events within Australia as well as our New Zealand champs and regional champs.

“She retired from officiating and judging around the pandemic time, but she was always willing to come to local Canterbury Race Walking association events and judge and help the local race walkers.

“She was a bubbly happy friendly person. She has left a hole in the walking community and especially Canterbury Race Walkers. She will be very much missed.”

Race Walking New Zealand Secretary Karen Davison said she was “deeply sorry to hear of the tragic death of much respected race walking judge and official Kathryn Fraser.

“Condolences to her family and the Athletics Canterbury community.”

In a statement, the Wellington branch said we are saddened to receive the news of the passing of well known New Zealand official & Race Walk judge, Kathryn Fraser. RIP.”

Race Walkers Across Australia member Denice Smith said “I am sure many Australian racewalkers and officials have met her and will be sad to here this news.

“Her contribution to the discipline of racewalking, over many years has been appreciated.”
