A much loved Akaroa skipper has been remembered for his colourful personality.

Julian Yates, aged 52, was killed on Friday in a motor vehicle accident on Weka Pass Road, near State Highway 7.

Black Cat Cruises has paid tribute to the popular skipper.

Chairman Paul Bingham said “the team at Black Cat Cruises and I are devastated to lose Julian Yates in a tragic, no fault of his own, car accident on Friday.”

“Julian represented the best of NZ tourism. Funny, humble, great story teller and passionate about his marine environment.”

Mr Bingham said “If you have been on an Akaroa cruise with us in the last decade you probably will have been entertained by Julian.”

“What a legend who will be missed. He wrote a chapter no one will forget.”

In a Facebook post the company said “”It is with heavy hearts that we acknowledge the passing of one of our family.”

“Julian (aka Captaino Juliano) was the face and voice of our Akaroa Nature Cruise for 10 years.”

“His passion for the harbour and its marine life was second to none and over 100,000 guests have been lucky enough to experience one of his trips.”

“His genuinely positive outlook and colourful personality means his loss will not only be felt by the Black Cat family, but also the wider Akaroa Community with which he was heavily involved.”

“Julian tragically passed away on Friday in a motor vehicle accident through no fault of his own.”

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.”

“Our team will be taking some time this week to support each other and celebrate Julian’s life.”

Police said inquiries into the circumstances of the crash are continuing.
